New recruits in Derbyshire County Council’s drive to create 700 apprenticeships are settling into their placements.

The county council is creating the placements over the next four years – 500 within the authority and 200 in private industry – and the first wave of 32 apprentices has taken up positions with the County Council, working in customer services, business and administration and road working.
Councillor Simon Spencer, Deputy Leader of Derbyshire County Council, said: “I am delighted to welcome the new apprentices to the county council.
“We’re committed to giving young people the best possible start in life and these placements will help them to gain the skills needed for a successful career.
“Around 70 further positions will shortly be made available and I’d urge young people to register their interest so that we can keep them informed.”
Details of further recruitment events for the next 70 apprenticeship placements to start in September will be announced in the next few weeks.
The county council is working in partnership with Learning Unlimited, Chesterfield College’s commercial arm, to manage its four-year scheme.

The county council is also supporting local businesses to take on a young person through its Apprenticeship Grants for Employers (AGE) programme. Businesses employing less than 50 people can apply for one of 200 grants of £2,500 to help take on a young person who is not in education, employment, or training.
Over 130 grants have already been approved since the scheme was launched in January.
