Apprenticeship success as College smashes campaign target!

Myerscough College is celebrating this week following the success of an Apprenticeship campaign launched by the College in January. Our campaign created 151 new Apprenticeship placements in just 100 days – smashing their original ‘100 in 100’ days campaign target after only 70 days.

Launched in January the ‘100 in 100’ initiative is part of Myerscough College’s yearlong Apprenticeship campaign, named ‘My Apprentice 2012’, which is designed to promote the benefits of Apprenticeships to employers and increase Apprenticeship numbers in the ‘landbased’ industries, such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Floristry and Sportsturf Management.

The 100 day Apprenticeship drive has created opportunities across a broad spectrum of industries, with job roles created in agriculture, animal care, greenkeeping, groundsmanship, amenity horticulture and grounds maintenance. The success of the campaign is due to the involvement of a wide range of private sector companies, public sector organisations and sports organisations across the North-West and, in some cases, across the UK.

The College’s Principal, Ann Turner, said:

“Achieving 151 Apprenticeships in only 100 days is incredible news. It means 151 people have secured a new job and will be trained to achieve a qualification that will hopefully secure them a long-term future. For employers it means they have gained new members of the workforce who will add value for many years to come. This however is not the end of our drive to increase Apprenticeships. For the remainder of 2012 we will build on the successes of the first 100 days and focus on securing further apprenticeships and opportunities throughout the year.”

Famous names have also joined the College’s campaign, including celebrity Chef and Lancashire businessman Nigel Haworth, who successfully recruited a young apprentice, to work on a new ‘Permaculture’ organic garden project at Haworth’s Michelin starred Northcote restaurant in Langho, Blackburn. Northcote’s new apprentice, Tom Dixon, will receive training by Myerscough College and will work with Groundwork Pennine Lancashire; the Blackburn based organisation responsible for creating the new permaculture project at Northcote.

The 100th apprentice to be recruited as part of the ‘100 in 100’ campaign was Kieran Hudson. The 22-year-old from Preston has been eager to turn his passion for animals into a career from a young age and will now receive that chance. Kieran has been taken on as an apprentice at Cuerden Birds of Prey in Preston where he will work full time whilst receiving on the job training provided by Myerscough College as part of a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Animal Care.

Even though the 100 in 100 campaign is now over, Myerscough College still has plenty of other apprenticeship events planned this year and will be hoping to secure many more apprenticeship opportunities in 2012.
