Flying the flag for jubilee and opportunities

IT is great to see so much bunting and so many flags being put up across the constituency in readiness for the Diamond Jubilee.

I made a small flagpole for our garden and the Union Flag is now fluttering nicely.

Before the celebrations got under way I had several engagements across the constituency, all highlighting the rich diversity of our communities and interests.

The importance of good training was on my agenda when I opened the new office of the excellent Tabs Training in Stroud, providing training for information technology, vocational and business courses, basic skills and employability.

As I noted in my remarks to staff and trainees, people are our most important resource so opening up opportunities and enhancing skills really matters, especially during the prevailing difficult economic conditions.

Next, I went to the official opening of the new primary school at Cooper’s Edge.

This project has been driven by local parents, keen to ensure that the new development has a great community school for the children.

From the start of the project I was impressed with the vitality and vision of all those involved.

Education featured in my itinerary again when I went to Parliament Primary School for a cream tea fundraising event.

Getting involved with local stakeholders is always rewarding and, in this case, obviously of great benefit to the school.

This event followed on from the successful Parliament to Parliament charity bike ride last month.

In Dursley, I attended the Cotswold Vale Talking Newspaper’s annual general meeting.

This is all about a free service for blind or partially sighted people who want to have audio access to local newspapers.

With all the Diamond Jubilee events, this whole period has been fantastic and also a powerful reminder of the strength of our society and sense of history.

Celebrating the dedication to our nation of our Queen brings us together in a very special way.
