by Apprentice incentive plan wins approval from college
HERTFORD Regional College (HRC) is backing an incentive scheme which allows businesses to apply for Government money to take on apprentices.

Companies can apply for the scheme which will give them £1,500 for taking on the apprentice. It will also cover the costs of their training in full if they are aged 16 to 18, and half of the cost for those aged 19 to 24.
HRC, which has sites in Ware and Turnford, offers a wide variety of apprenticeships including engineering, business administration and plumbing.
Its client liaison manager Annamaria Cast said: “With an apprentice, the employer gets the chance to mould them into the employee they want – we can tailor courses to their needs and change the framework for the programme to suit them.
“Companies can come in and meet the students, and pick out the ones which they think they would work well with.
“Taking an apprentice gives you the chance to get someone into your company with a different outlook than if the workforce is all older and already fully qualified. They are more invested in the company.
“We get a lot of employers really keen on helping young people and giving them a chance – they can’t get experience if they don’t have a job.
“An apprenticeship is basically a training package attached to a job – the apprentices improve by working with people that have more experience, and that helps them fit the company too.
“If a company can’t afford someone already qualified then this scheme means that they get the incentive money and don’t have to pay for training, and by providing young people with jobs they are doing a great thing for society.”
The incentives are open to businesses with fewer than 250 employees that have not recruited an apprentice for three years.
