Chinese/English academy waiting for the go-ahead

A GROUP of parents and teachers is in talks with the Department for Education to open a Chinese/English bilingual free school in Edgware.

The Marco Polo Academy aims to be the first primary school in England in which the curriculum will be taught in both English and Mandarin.

Andrew Hung, spokesman for the school’s steering group, said that he wanted to provide a bilingual, culturally inclusive education that answered the need for primary school places in Edgware.

He said: “We are giving people in the area more opportunities and choice that they would not get otherwise.”

The group met the Department for Education last month and is awaiting approval for the free school before choosing a permanent home.
