Chris Grayling in denial over welfare-to-work – Byrne

Liam ByrneLiam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to reports that Chris Grayling is to warn ‘underperforming’ welfare-to-work providers, said:

“Chris Grayling is in denial. He claims that his department has undertaken a ‘revolution in welfare to work’ when his Government has brought Britain record levels of unemployment.

“While Iain Duncan Smith has been asleep at the wheel, JSA claimants have rocketed up by over 160,000 in the last year. His comprehensive failure has now opened a £9 billion benefits splurge over this Parliament.

“In spite of Chris Grayling’s boasts, the independent National Audit Office says that he will fall 35% short of his targets to get people back to work.

“If ministers are so confident their Work Programme is on track, then why are they keeping information on results a state secret? Iain Duncan Smith has banned contractors from breathing a word about how they’re getting on. If ministers feel they are on track, prove it. Show us the results.”
