The Chinese government has pledged more support for education sector in terms of exchange of expertise in an effort to bring about social economic development in the country.

This was revealed yesterday at the University of Dar es salaam by Fu Jijun, Deputy Head and Political Counsellor of the embassy of the People’s Republic of China at the opening ceremony of Higher Education Fair sponsored by China Scholarship Council.

“To meet this initiative, China Zhengzhou Institute of Aeronautical Industry Management will soon sign an agreement with the University of Dodoma to establish an Institute of Confucius in Dodoma as well as push forward healthy development relations between China and Tanzania,” he said.

Apart from that, Chinese government has also promised to support Tanzania in building rural schools, establishing laboratories in higher education institutions and training masters-level vocational teachers.

In recent years, the Tanzanian government has granted over 30 scholarships to Chinese students to study Kiswahili language and additionally, Kiswahili teachers have been sent to China to teach the language in different schools and colleges.

“As China, we express thanks to the Tanzania government for this support because education has become an important bridge to improve understanding and friendship between China and Tanzania as well as significant element to push forward healthy development between Tanzania and China,” he noted.

Highlighting on higher education institutions, he said they were important places to cultivate talents amongst youths, stressing that the future belongs to the youth generation.

The envoy also noted that the cooperation and exchange between China and Tanzania in the sphere of education have developed fast and achieved a lot because last year, about 900 Tanzanian students were granted Chinese government scholarships to study in the leading Asian economy.

Apart from that, 1900 Tanzanian professionals from different sectors have attended seminars in China with the support from Chinese government. According to Jijun, the number of Tanzanian students studying in China reached above 700 last year.

“As I speak to you, exchange and cooperation amongst higher education institutions between China and Tanzania have become more and more frequent, and the field for cooperation has enlarged.

China Scholarship Council deputy secretary-general Cao Shihai said that the main goal of the China Education Fair is to show Tanzanians, including students from different universities, the general picture of Chinese higher education system.

“Through this exhibition, we hope that students from different universities will see what Chinese universities offer. We invite parents and other people in the city to visit us at the UDSM to know more about our country,” said Shihai.

He thanked the UDSM, the ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Tanzania-China Promotion Centre Ltd, and Chinese Embassy in Tanzania for their support.

“Presently, we have more than 290,000 international students studying in China by last year, which proves that the level and quality of the Chinese higher education has been widely accepted and recognised world-wide,” said deputy SG.

Meanwhile, Education and Vocational Training deputy minister Philipo Mulugo said that China has been successful in many endeavors, and the Fair would be of importance to local higher learning institutions and the public general to get the Chinese experience.

Implementation of the cultural agreement between Tanzania and China has contributed a lot to the economic development the former through training of personnel at all levels of higher education.
