Apprenticeships and experience worthwhile
When people are looking to get into the labor market, it can often be the case, for young jobseekers in particular, that they struggle because of the fact that even though they have the skills that would serve them well in the position they are going for, they cannot get a job as they have no previous experience relevant to that which they are applying for.
According to one expert, this means that there should be more companies around the world who are looking to bring young people into their workforces through apprenticeships and work experience programs which help them to gain relevant knowledge for the job, and lets firms test the water and offer specific forms of training.
Hilary Jeanes, leadership coach and human resources consultant at PurpleLineConsulting.co.uk, said that these sorts of schemes are worthwhile as young people can choose them as an alternative way to get into a company.
“If apprenticeships offer genuine opportunities for people to learn skills and gain work experience that will help them understand what they want from their working life, then I support the idea. Some employers may not plan effectively how to train, manage and develop the apprentices to help them gain from the experience, and so they end up as cheap labour in unrewarding roles.”
She also said that youngsters can help themselves by realising that work experience is not below them when it comes to finding a new job, whether it be paid or unpaid, as it can show companies what they can do, and can also lead to them gaining a new type of training which ends up being specific for the role that they want to get themselves into in the future.
The hiring of young people on apprenticeships and work experience positions could be beneficial to companies, as they can often find a cheap way to seek out employees who may be their top performers for years to come. It could also be the case that they offer good training and end up with a dedicated and committed workforce for the future.
