Changes in UK higher education are raising student expectations and placing Arts & Humanities subjects under particular scrutiny. With pressure on teaching budgets and student fees due to rise in England, the HE community as a whole is concerned about value for money, and employability is a key focus.
At “Pedagogies of Hope and Opportunity”, the HEA’s first annual conference for learning and teaching in the Arts & Humanities, several sessions will be devoted to employability, and a keynote speech by Professor Giovanni Shiuma will focus on the related theme of the power of culture in business.

Professor Mark Addis, Birmingham City University
“No jobs for artists”? Developing graduate attributes and employability in Fine Art
Dr Cheri Logan, University of Cumbria
The HEA Arts and Humanities Summit, which took place in March, called for the pulling together of the powerful evidence of Arts & Humanities’ value to society. With 75% of graduate jobs non-discipline specific, Arts and Humanities degrees not only promote transferable skills of employability, but also instill wider benefits for individuals and the community as a whole.
