John Hayes MP, the Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, has acknowledged Highbury College’s success in international education.
Speaking at an Association of College (AoC) conference, the Conservative MP praised Highbury’s recent partnership work in Nigeria. He said “Who else can boast the Nigerian Minister of State for Education personally leading a delegation to the college, following their offer to support that Government’s Educational Transformation Agenda?”
Mr Hayes was referring to a visit at the beginning of the year by Chief Ezenwo Nysom Wike, who is hoping to emulate Highbury College’s high standards of vocational education and training in the West African country.
He continued: “The College’s lecturers have also worked with Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), a tertiary college in Ikorodu on the outskirts of Lagos, to identify the professional needs of the radio industry in Nigeria. They have developed an innovative curriculum aimed at meeting those needs, incorporating new delivery and assessment methods with the emphasis on practical skills for employability.”
One of LASPOTECH’s lecturers echoed the minister’s views saying: “Our community radio station will be a learning ground for other community radio stations. It will be an opportunity to share and to enrich Nigeria as a society.”
Highbury College has recently been awarded the International Charter by the AoC. It is only the fourth college in the UK to receive this commendation, which recognises a strategic, well-resourced and quality driven approach to international work.
Principal & Chief Executive of Highbury College, Stella Mbubaegbu CBE, commented: “It’s an honour to receive such high praise and recognition for our international work. Our ambition is to share the practices that we have honed throughout nearly 50 years in education with our partners around the world. We are committed to ensuring our partners achieve the same levels of success that have seen us become one of the best performing colleges in the UK.
“The International Charter reflects our commitment to quality and our ethical approach to all areas of international activity. The AoC have strong criteria which they measured Highbury against and I am happy to say they found us deserving of this exclusive accolade.”
