by Two new apprentices for Cheltenham Ladies’ College’s Parabola Arts Centre
A SCHOOL which educates children from some of the wealthiest families in the world is offering a first step on the job ladder for apprentices.
The Cheltenham Ladies’ College, which charges day fees of £6,584 per term, is recruiting for two positions to work in one of its landmark buildings.
Youngsters who want a headstart in the culture industry can apply for the jobs at the Parabola Arts Centre.
Theatre manager Christina Poulton said: “I am so excited that we are offering apprenticeships. I speak to lots of enthusiastic, capable young people who have applied for numerous arts jobs but are turned down because they don’t have any experience.
“It can become a really disheartening cycle.”
The positions available are for a technical theatre worker and another job in cultural venue operations.
Both are aimed at people aged over 18 and are interested in a career in the creative and leisure industries.
Applicants with a degree are not considered suitable.
The college said both roles were suited to enthusiastic, committed youngsters, but added that no previous experience was required. The successful pair will gain a year’s experience working in a real-world setting and paid employment.
Ms Poulton added: “We will also make sure that both apprentices build up a good background knowledge in how venues run, the relevant health and safety legislation and a network of contacts with other professionals and arts organisations in the area.
“Both apprenticeships are an ideal start for anyone who wants to work in theatres, music venues, leisure organisations, galleries or for events, conferences and festivals.”
Future career paths for the cultural venue operations apprentices include box office staff, venue management or front-of-house management as well as roles in arts administration, marketing, education and outreach work.
Technical theatre apprentices could go on to roles like lighting designer, venue technician, sound engineer, production management, stage management or stage crew.
The people who are taken on by the college will have the pleasure of working in one of Cheltenham’s best-known buildings. The £12.5 million centre, which was finished in 2009, won the best new building title at Cheltenham Civic Society’s Civic Awards in March 2010. It has hosted touring productions, school plays and concerts, and even BBC Question Time.
