Energy Academy | Newcastle College

Join us at this keynote industry event, the opening of the Energy Academy – a new multi-partner, cross regional collaboration between Newcastle College, major employers, local authorities, Sector Skills Councils and strategic stakeholders in the sector.

The opening will bring together employers from the offshore and renewable energy sector, representatives from education, business and local government. We are delighted to be hosting our distinguished guest speakers from government and industry, on their first visit to the north east:

• Tim Yeo MP, President of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee

Tim Yeo MP served in the Thatcher and Major Governments, latterly as Minister of State for the Environment and Countryside, where he reformed planning law, helped to develop climate change policy and established the now thriving Energy Saving Trust. From 2005 to 2010 he chaired the House of Common Environmental Audit Select Committee and in 2010 became Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee. In March 2012 he was elected President of the Renewable Energy Association (REA). The REA represents the full range of energy technologies across power, heat, transport and renewable gas and is the largest renewable industry body.

• Walt Patterson, independent international analyst and writer on energy and environment

Walt Patterson came to the UK in 1960 from Canada. He trained as a nuclear physicist and has spent his life teaching, writing and troublemaking. As an independent analyst and writer on energy and environment, he has published thirteen books and hundreds of papers, articles and reviews, on nuclear power, coal technology, renewable energy, energy systems, energy policy and electricity.

Since 1991 he has been a fellow of what is now the Energy, Environment and Development Programme at Chatham House in London and he is a frequent broadcaster and advisor to television and radio. In 2000 the Institute of Energy, now the Energy Institute, awarded Walt their annual Melchett Medal.

The opening will showcase how employers can access a much needed training facility that will help them to train, recruit and retain highly skilled workers. A key role for the centre will be the provision of higher level skills and specialist training that meets the needs of regional employers, employers can access:

• Apprenticeships and Higher Level Apprenticships in Subsea and Renewables
• Foundation Degrees in Subsea and Renewables
• Welding and Fabrication
• CNC – full five axis training
• Instrumentation and SCADA

The event starts at 12pm on Thursday 10th May and will give you the opportunity to tour the facility, understand the vision of the new Academy and its benefit to employers, and network with fellow industry professionals. Refreshments and a light buffet will be provided.
