New North East apprenticeship campaign tops 400
MORE than 400 apprenticeship opportunities have now been created in the North-east – thanks to the Evening Gazette’s new campaign.
In the first five weeks of our new initiative – 100 Days: The Apprenticeship Challenge – 414 new starts have been recorded.
The Gazette has joined forces with the National Apprenticeship Service to get businesses to take advantage of the huge opportunities offered by taking on apprentices.
Last year we worked with NAS to promote the 100 in 100 initiative to urge firms to start 100 Apprentices in 100 days.
At the end of the initiative 1,355 new apprenticeships had been created.
This year’s campaign is seeing, on average, 83 new apprenticeships created every week.
Among the firms and organisations registering new vacancies have been Darlington College and the North East Chamber of Commerce.
The call has also been made to find the North-east’s apprenticeship stars.
The National Apprenticeship and National Training Awards 2012 have been launched.
The search is now on to find the country’s top apprenticeship and training champions, as the National Training Awards and National Apprenticeship Awards join forces for the first time.
Both awards, which are run by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), are now open for entries to compete to be named the best of the best on a regional and national level.
Last year Tata Global Beverages, based at Eaglescliffe, was winner of the Large Employer category.
The company, which manufactures the Tetley tea brand, employs 450 people.
“Being a winner last year was amazing,” said Tony Stubbs, plant manager. We continually invest in the development of our staff and to have this recognised was a huge achievement.

Entries close on Friday, May 25.
