Apprentices wanted at South Gosforth martial arts club

MARTIAL arts instructor Dee Hunter is looking for up to 20 apprentices to help her train up a new confident generation.

The passionate 28-year-old runs Solo Martial Arts in South Gosforth, Newcastle with brother Darren.

And now the pair are planning to expand their academy and hope to deliver the many skills they believe martial arts can offer to the wider community, especially young people.

“Being a martial arts instructor can be a highly rewarding career,” said Dee.

“One of the things I love about the job is seeing how it can change people’s lives.

“When some of our kids first joined us, they had so little confidence. But it has been brilliant watching them grow and start to believe in themselves.”

Dee is looking for people especially to teach children and young people.

No martial arts experience is necessary, just bags of motivation and enthusiasm.

The academy offers a mixture of kickboxing, boxing, karate, Ju-jitsu, Tae Kwon Do and Eskrima.

Both Dee and Darren took up martial arts after they were bullied as youngsters.

They found the skills martial arts offers helped them to battle back from rock bottom and regain confidence.

“There is a lot more to it than just self defence,” adds Dee. “A lot of it is about gaining confidence in yourself and it is also good exercise too.

“I used to want to be a police officer when I was younger like my dad, and then I wanted to be a teacher.

“But I have dyslexia and so I thought I would never be able to do these things.

“But through martial arts I am able to pass on my knowledge and skills and it is a great feeling when someone thanks you for what you have taught them.

“People don’t have to have experience of martial arts.

“Even if someone is looking for a career change they should get in touch.”

As well as apprenticeships, the pair are also offering budding entrepreneurs the chance to run their own franchise in the form of Solo Martial Arts Kidz business, aimed at seven to 12 year olds.

With support from Darren, after completing the relevant training, successful applicants could then go on to run their own classes on a self-employed basis.
