‘100 apprentices in 100 days’ initiative reaches target with 69 days to spare

THE apprenticeship scheme launched by the borough council earlier this year has gone above and beyond its target.
Employers across 1066 Country were invited to meet the challenge of taking on 100 apprentices in 100 days from the launch day of February 6.
But such was the response the target was smashed in just 31 days with the council overwhelmed by the response.
Pledges came from both the Hastings and Rother areas including both the public and private sector.
So far the scheme has attracted 133 apprentice places including catering, social care, property management, business administration, engineering and the legal profession.
Addressing the full council meeting last week, councillor Peter Chowney, lead member for regeneration, said: “The 100 days initiative has been amazingly successful.
“The jobs apprentices have been taking up include more traditional kinds of apprenticeship work, such as electricians, mechanics and engineers, but also cookery, fitness instruction, and even horse care.
“Overall, about a third of the apprenticeships are in engineering and technical trades with most of the others in leisure & catering, social care, property managemen and business administration.
“It’s good to see that local employers have risen to the challenge, and have come up with good quality apprenticeships that have every chance of leading on to permanent jobs in worthwhile careers.
“But we don’t need to stop here – there are still plenty of local people wanting to take up worthwhile apprenticeships, so I urge local employers to get involved if they think they can offer an opportunity through this scheme.”
