Apprentice drive backed by 270 companies

MORE than 270 companies have backed a campaign to create more apprenticeships.

The Journal has linked up with the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) to help firms find the staff they need to grow and help those without a job make a new start.

And, in its first month, 100 Days: The Apprenticeship Challenge has seen more than 270 businesses sign up new apprenticeships, either of existing staff or with new recruits.

Alan Wallace, head of employer accounts for the NAS, said he was impressed that so many had taken up the challenge to increase apprenticeships so quickly in the 100-day campaign.

“Apprenticeships continue to go from strength to strength with a record number of starts in the last academic year and an increase in growth across all ages, levels and sectors,” he said.

“The consistent growth across all ages shows that apprenticeships are helping young people to get into work and gain a qualification as well as supporting employers to invest in improving the skills of their workforce.”

Last year, The Journal and its sister paper the Evening Gazette worked with NAS to get 100 firms to take on 100 apprentices in 100 days.
