EducationInvestor – Article: Majority of new apprenticeships go to over-19s

The vast majority of apprenticeships are still going to those aged 19 or over, figures from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills have shown.

Provisional data published yesterday shows that in the six months to January 256,500 people began apprenticeship schemes. Of those, only 79,100 were aged under 19.

But 77,100 were aged between 19 and 24, while the largest cohort – of 100,300 – were aged 25 and over.

In a statement, skills minister John Hayes said he was particularly encouraged to see the large number of apprenticeships started by younger people.

He said: “These increases are extremely encouraging and it is testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to apprenticeships. They are at the heart of our skills policy because they equip people with the skills they need for a prosperous future and provide businesses with the expertise they need to grow.
